Gyaros or “Gioura”, as they call it in Andros, is visible by the naked eye from Andros’ west (northwest actually) coast. It is hard to make an estimate about the island’s extent when you’re watching from afar. You discover that it is more to it when you get there. As you’re getting away from the ruins of the untended port, looking up the village, one thing comes to mind: Awe!
Tons of firebrick cautiously form an enormous settlement built in levels as far as the eye can see. You get to the main entrance of the building that the jail was housed. To your right the words of Ritsos carved in a marble sign make your stomach tied in knots. You get in. Long corridors, rooms to the left and right through out. You can’t see where the stairs at the end of the corridor leads to. As you move further in, a mystique sets in. There, in front of you, the greatness of human put in construction what was its purpose though…
